And then there was a cow.
By michelle | August 18, 2008
Ahem. Isn’t this just um… fantastic? It’s a cow. A real… cow. It didn’t moo or anything, so on the excitement scale it wasn’t like… a 10 or anything, but come on! a Disney-Cow!

Midway Museum
By michelle | August 18, 2008
So the Midway is a carrier that was retired in ‘04 and made into a museum. Pretty neat. Lots of people around.
The Midway was especially cool for me because it was one of those uncommon opportunities to see what sorts of things jon is working on. From the Midway you can see the Nimitz, which is where he spends his time.
We’ll call this one the … “flight deck”.

And you know, the obligatory “jon and michelle take a picture of themselves” shot:

Perhaps jon will be kind enough to leave a comment and tell us more?

But wait! There’s more!
By michelle | August 18, 2008
If you thought a super-date was just a gondola ride and a nice dinner, you’re totally missing out on the SUPERdate. This was a weekend long extravaganza. Pre-Gondola, jon and I went to the farmers market and then to Balboa park! Balboa Park is this *magical* place… oh, wait. No. Balboa park is (as it sounds) a park, about the size of the entire downtown San Diego. It holds the Zoo, quite a few museums, and a lawn bowling club among other things. It’s rather incredible that two miles from the very center of downtown, you can be surrounded by squirrels, old people and bums. Oh… wait.
Okay, I’m not giving it enough credit. Balboa park is amazing. We spent the day there, saw this GIANT fig tree. (it’s so old and protected that there’s a fence surrounding it so picnicers can’t get to close and kids can’t sully it up with their playfulness.
Saw some flowers, laid in the grass, played frisbee, drank some wine, ate some cheese. yada yada.

All and all, I live a very charmed life. And I’m incredibly in love, as much as that makes you want to puke. I don’t care.
So. As I’m rereading this, I’m remembering that some of these events happened on saturday and some on sunday. I can’t… remember. And jon’s still asleep to verify so you’ll have to deal with my faulty sense of time. Saturday we hit up the market in the morning, picnicked our hearts out at balboa and then went to Pops in the Park (symphony out on the waterfront). Sunday, we went to the midway museum (more on that coming), then the gondola rides and then dinner. Regardless, it was all cool.

Dinner in j&m-land
By michelle | August 18, 2008
To continue the superdate, after the gondola ride jon and I went to Chez Loma. Chez Loma is an adorable (and well reviewed) French restaurant on Coronado. In general, I love restaurants in houses.
Dinner was awesome. Wine was awesome. I can’t remember what we talked about, but I remember the conversation being awesome.
All and all, a really good ending to a great day.

More from j&m-land
By michelle | August 18, 2008
In the mood for one of those sickeningly romantic stories? Jon and I went on a gondola ride. It was really, really awesome.
Previously in our adventures, j and I stopped at J Winery in Sonoma and picked up a really nice bottle of sparkling. That, combined with some chocolate dipped strawberries and a really lovely setting. Here are a couple photos:

So this was “Thomás”. When asked, “Thomás” said that a bad day at work included a marriage proposal gone awry. Which leads me to two thoughts: 1. ‘awh, what a *romantic* setting for a proposal!’ and 2. ‘jesus, if she says no.. you’re just kind of stuck out on a boat in the middle of the water.’
Thomás is also a natural at posing for photos. What a ham.

Just found this blog: Urban Housewife and I think it’s awesome. Just wanted to share, mostly, but take a look at her review of Ubuntu from a few weeks ago.

Life News
By michelle | August 15, 2008
Well not OUR life news, but not any less important, I’ll have you know. (j and I do have a couple awesome things in the works for later).
My maid-of-honour (Rachel) and her husbandaroo (Groomsman-Chris) moved to Vermont this week. They packed up their entire house, put it in a moving truck and drove with their puppy and kitty from the southSouth to the northEast. Pretty huge changes, and despite the pretty huge stress level she’s having at the moment, I think she’s handling it really well. (I for one would be filling your RSS feeds with angsty blog posts!)
It was a really, really difficult choice to make for both of them and I’m sure that everything will work out in the end. Just, don’t get knocked up. Rachel, are you listening? Law school is no place to get knocked up.
Good luck on the settling in.
Sendin some love to the Davidsons.

emails?
By michelle | August 14, 2008
the internal debate today is back to “change name, or don’t change name”. And here’s one on the tipping scale for “don’t change name”: have you ever *signed* someone else’s name? you just can’t do it! It’s *weird*!
Here are some pros and cons:
Pros:
- fitting in with the family, and whatnot. you know, looking cool to the other eggers.
- it’s the socially correct thing to do.
- the eggers have a…. family. that’s … big. and family-y.
Cons:
- what do I do with my email address? [GRIMORD at gmail.com]
- taking another persons name is weird. and antiquated. and… did I mention it’s weird?
- I … like my last name. I don’t know why, because I don’t have any huge familial attachments to it, but I like what it stands for.
- it’s the socially correct thing to do (to take the guy’s last name), unless of course you hang out in a liberal, uber-contemporary, slightly feminist circle. Because then your friends say things like “oh. huh. well, that was probably the right choice.”
- can i please return to my email address? I’m not sure if you know how attached i am to it. besides. there’s already an “eggers@” and a “meggers@”.
- “meggers” sounds ridiculous
- there are no “Michelle Grimords”. anywhere. in fact, there are only a handful of “grimords” at all, and we’re all mildly related. (by contrast, there are at least two known “michelle eggers”, both the types of 20-something-girls that have myspace pages.
So. in conclusion, I made “michelle @ teameggers.com” to try an internally solve at least one of my issues. If there are any other eggers that are in the market for a new email address, YOU TOO(!) can be @teameggers.com. just think. a whole team of us.

On a more serious note…
By michelle | August 7, 2008
Who am I kidding, I haven’t had a serious note in my body all day. Which is probably why I’m blogging precisely when I should be working. Well.
How do you feel about readings at weddings? Choose one:
A. they make the wedding way too long.
B. they’re awesome and you should have some
C. they make the wedding too long, but you should have them anyways because it’s important for the weddingness of the wedding. and besides, you can read anything you want, like “ode to a large tuna at the market”.
Furthermore, what do you *read*? Would it be inappropriate for mushy poetry? or maybe like… a few lines from the new york times that day? do people talk about their feelings at these sorts of events?
All of this is telling me that maybe i should have *gone to* a few more weddings before I tried to have one myself.
